Description
In the center of the city of Rivne rises the Cathedral in honor of the Resurrection of Christ. The Cathedral is the most prominent architectural landmark of the city and impresses with its grandeur and beauty. The Holy Resurrection Cathedral was built in the 19th century on the donation of Emperor Alexander III on the church site that burned down in 1881. At first, the new temple was called Oleksandrovsky in honor of the emperor. Then the first name was returned - Holy Resurrection Cathedral.
In 1912, the Cathedral received gifts from the Patriarch of Jerusalem - church relics and several precious icons. During the Soviet rule, the Museum of atheism was located here. With the beginning of democratic transformations, the religious building was returned to the city's Orthodox community. Thanks to the fact that the walls were simply whitewashed with lime, it became possible to restore and restore the paintings. A new iconostasis was also installed. Since then and to this day, the Cathedral has served the community according to its purpose. In the Holy Resurrection Church, as in other Rivne churches, there are shrines - parts of the incorruptible bodies of saints or holy relics. It is believed that they have beneficial power. In particular, there is an ark with some of the Saint Mercurius of Chernihiv relics. There are also parts of the relics of the great holy martyr Varvara and Nicholas the Wonderworker.
The Resurrection Cathedral is cross-domed, four-columned, three-lapsed with a mosquito-proof covering. Choirs are arranged in the western part of the Cathedral. The building is built of brick, with rust and decoration on the facades. Five tops complete the complex three-dimensional composition of the Cathedral. The tops consist of helmet-shaped domes and finials in the form of crowns, which rest on faceted drums in a plan. Above the volume of the vestibule is the belfry, an openwork brick superstructure of an arched shape with a crown-shaped finish. On the right side of the main entrance are closed stairs to the underground temple. The entrance to the underground temple is arranged in the altar part of the Cathedral. The doors are located on the western, northern, and southern sides. These are magnificently decorated, promising portals. A wide grand staircase made of sandstone leads to the entrances.
