Description
The legendary Castle of Treasures in Dubno is a monument of history and architecture. The bastion-type Duben fortress is located near the Ikva River in the Rivne region. Now it is considered a cultural reserve of the city. The Castle has a trapezoidal shape. The entrance to the Castle is laid through a bridge under which the waters of Ikva flow in a moat. An incredible view of the river and the court penates opens at the entrance.
The Duben castle complex consists of three architectural monuments: The 17th-century gatehouse at the entrance. The 17th-18th-century palace of Ostroz princes is right after the entry. The late 18th-century palace of the Lubomirsky princes to the left after entering the fortress territory. Both palaces are adjacent to the Castle's defensive walls, and their exterior windows overlook the river.
The rectangular building at the entrance gate was built in the 17th century on the foundations of the late 15th century. It consists of a tower and a domed roof and has a portal in the pompous Renaissance style. The decoration of the gate is the coat of arms of Prince Janusz Ostrozki. Unusual, intricate patterns in the Renaissance style frame the coat of arms. The first floor of the building was used for the accommodation of servants and guards. On the second floor were living rooms for the owners. Cellars were used as an arsenal.
On the castle courtyard, to the right of the entrance gate, in the 17th century, the palace of the princes of Ostroh was built, a one-story office wing called the office. The castle administration was located here - the housekeeper, treasurer, and manager. A little later, the second floor was added to the office. It was here that the archives of the owners of the Castle, the surrounding nobility of the princes of Zamoi, Konetspol, Zbaraz, and Czartoryi were stored. The decoration of the palace is a geometric ornament in the oriental style. It is located along the perimeter and separates the first and second floors of the building. There are deep and spacious dungeons under the palace.
In the castle complex, a separate architectural monument is the palace of the Lubomirsky princes. It was built on top of the old foundation at the end of the 18th century at the expense of the owner of the Castle, the Polish prince Mykhailo Lubomyrskyi. The palace was built by the chief architect of the Commonwealth, the famous Italian architect Domenico Merlini, in the Western European classicism style.
The dark dungeons of the Castle in Dubno were an absolute labyrinth where a large number of people could hide in case of danger. Lard, honey, jam, wheat, weapons, and arrows were also stored here.
The main events in the work "Taras Bulba" occur near the Duben Castle. It was not for nothing that Gogol chose this fortification, as it struck a chord with its beauty.
