Description
The Art Museum, named after Yosyp Bokshay, is the former building of the District Administration.
Župa is a Slavic synonym of the Hungarian word "committee" - an administrative-territorial unit within the Kingdom of Hungary. The building itself was built in 1809. There is a coat of arms on the pediment, which depicts a hood with a crown. In one hand, he holds an oak branch, and in the other - ears of wheat - symbols of the glory and fertility of the earth.
The building housed the institutions of the Uzhan Committee, and judicial bodies, and a prison functioned in the left wing. Various cultural events, theater performances, concerts, and balls took place in the magnificent halls.
In 1918, the city found itself in a whirlwind of political events. Austria-Hungary lost the First World War and disintegrated into national states. According to the Treaty of Versailles, the dividing line between the Czechoslovak Republic and Hungary had to pass through Uzhhorod. The 31st regiment of Czechoslovak legionnaires entered Uzhhorod. The official ceremony of the transfer of power took place in this building. A new page began in the city's history, which became the capital of the region - Subcarpathian Rus.
The Zhupanat building became the residence of the first governor of Subcarpathian Rus, Hryhoriy Zhatkovich. Born in the USA, a brilliant lawyer, he was the initiator of the accession of Subcarpathian Rus to Czechoslovakia with the rights of autonomy.
A park surrounds the building, and it now houses the Art Museum named after Josyp Bokshay. The collection includes more than 10,000 different exhibits. Back in 1945, the basis of such a rich exposition was the unique collection of the Zemsky Gallery.
The gallery occupies all the halls of the Hungarian manor. Huge rooms, classic interior style - everything seems to have been created for the display of paintings. And there is something to see here! The collection presents the works of Western European artists, starting from the Renaissance, a wonderful collection of icons, pieces of Ukrainian artists - Ilya Brodlakovich-Vyshenskyi, Taras Shevchenko, Opanas Slastyon, Rufin Sudkovskyi, Serhiy Vasilkivskyi, Ivan Trush, and others.
The artistic output of Zakarpattia artists is the masterpieces of recognized luminaries of visual culture: Josyp Bokshay, Adalbert Erdeli, Andrii Kotska, Fedir Manayla, A. Boretskyi, Vasyl Svida, Zoltan Sholtes, and many others. Contemporary art of Transcarpathia is also presented. The authors are gifted masters who work in different styles, genres, and directions and bring their bright accents to art.
